The Keep having closed, Ruby and Ness sat in the car, waiting for Cash and Jed to return.

“Of course I could be wrong…” Ness ventured.

Ruby turned to her. “What happened to instinct?”

She shrugged. “Okay. I’m not wrong.”

“No, I don’t think you are. Blakemort truly is a dumping ground.”

“Certainly the land that it occupies is. It’s a place where those that were feared for whatever reasons, were disposed of perhaps, by people in the surrounding villages. But eventually it became a place that the feared were attracted to. Like calling to like.”

“And they were the first architects?”

“Possibly.”

“It’s such ancient history,” Ruby remarked, again feeling frustrated.

“It is, and in many ways it’s lost history.”

“Unofficial.”

“So much of it.”

“It’s even more imperative we find out what Corinna knows about it; some modern history in other words.”

“It is,” Ness’s voice was so solemn. “And that we keep in mind Theo’s words too – what haunts us also makes us vulnerable; the secrets that we keep.”

“I don’t have any secrets, Ness.” And it was true; she didn’t, not anymore; her secrets, those masking her heritage, had all been exposed.

“Well I do.”

Ruby turned her head. “Sorry, Ness, what did you say? I didn’t quite catch that.”

Ness raised her voice, but only by a fraction. “I said, I do.”

A banging on the window caused them both to flinch.

“Christ Almighty, Cash!”

Although Ruby roared at him, it did nothing to erase the grin that was on Cash’s face, which stayed firmly in place as he opened the car door and took his turn in the back seat this time, alongside Jed. If she was annoyed at him for the fright he’d caused, it quickly faded. The pair of them were a sight to behold, covered as they were in mud, but smelling so fresh, so alive! She inhaled deeply. It was such a contrast to the mustiness at Blakemort – the smell of stagnation – that had made her feel so sick. Come to think of it, she still felt sick, perhaps more so than ever considering what they’d found out.

“Watcha been doing?” Cash leant forward to give Ruby a peck on the check.

“Research.”

“Well I know that. I meant did you find anything interesting?”

“Then perhaps word your question more appropriately if you want the correct answer.” It was Ness who’d answered instead of Ruby; a haughty Ness.

“Ness?” Ruby said, querying her sudden change of mood.

“It’s late. I need to get home. Rosie’s been on her own long enough.”

“Okay,” Ruby replied, still somewhat puzzled. They’d been talking about secrets, and whereas she had said she didn’t have any, Ness had said she did. Whether she was going to confide further, Ruby had no idea thanks to Cash’s interruption. However, she didn’t doubt that Ness had secrets, plenty of them. A private person could also be regarded as a secretive person. It was a shame Cash and Jed had returned when they did. Maybe her colleague had wanted to offload something. There was no chance of that now though, not
